[ST:Ent][Tech] Overview of 1.05:"Unexpected" SERIES: "Enterprise" EPISODE: "Unexpected" PROD#: ENT005 EP#: 1.05 RATING: PG AIRDATE: wed-17-oct-2001-20:00 EPDATE: [...] OFFICIAL: startrek.com/library/episodes_ent_detail.asp?ID=121950 FROM: Phillip Thorne, thorne@underbase.org POST-TO: rec.arts.startrek.tech, rec.arts.sf.tv REVIEW#: 13.0 FORMAT#: 3.21 URL: underbase.org/dept/trek/ent105_unexpected.txt This technical overview format is intended to be easy-to-scan, unambiguous, and precise, and a foundation for (in later revisions, a summary of) further freeform discussion. It distinguishes between what is said/claimed by characters, from what is actually shown. Whenever possible, it uses spellings from the closed captioning (which may not be entirely consistent, or match those on the official website). Corrections to typos, phrasing, etc. are welcome, but please, only if you include a specific citation -- the idea is to avoid *half-remembered* lines and *unrealized inferences*. The NOTES are listed in seen-on-screen order, and ANALYSIS summarizes topics. Abbreviations used: (m/f/?) name belongs to male/female/unclear, (os) on viewer screen, (?) quote is uncertain, (sp?) spelling is unclear, (vo) voiceover. This overview is (c)2002 Phillip Thorne, thorne@underbase.org. If you wish to reuse large hunks of text, or use this as a major source, please notify me and include a citation. PLOT SPOILERS BELOW! "Gravity plating"(?) [plates?]. While Archer is taking a water-shower, the gravity goes out in his quarters, and he lifts off the floor amid undulating spherical water globules. A few moments later, gravity is restored, and he drops to the deck. ACT 1 002. Mess: T'pol, Phlox, extras. T'pol ladles "plomeek broth" from a tureen. Phlox suggests she try the blueberry pancakes. "When in Fellebia, do as the Fellebians do." She retorts that she suffers enought merely to *smell* the food. She goes to the beverage dispenser for "water, carbonated" and gets brown sludge instead. 003. Engineering: Tucker, Archer, extras. A crewman reports that Ens.Almeck(m)(sp?) reports that C Deck is down to 12-deg. The plasma exhaust flow is somehow constricted. Billy. A small explosion in a portside panel; Archer and another crewman use cylindrical fire extinguishers. 004. Bridge: Mayweather. 005a. Bridge: All but Phlox. "EM residue" in the exhaust ports. Archer asks ignite: danger? Not if polarize hull plating, stay at >=half-impulse. He orders the screen to "A4". Fire a charge 80-m due aft. (Is fired from 'tween-booms pod.) Slo-mo recording of the flare. "Some kind of stealth technology," says T'pol. "Kaja lakala rox j----" = "We are complying with your request. We ask you not to harm us." "Teraphasic coils", "warp reactor". 005b. Screen FX. 006. Sick Bay: Phlox, Tucker, Archer, T'pol. Phlox administers 40-mg of "Mirazine", which should shorten the decompression process by half, to only 3-h. T'pol reports they claim the ability to synthesize carbohydrates and proteins. 007. FX space. Shuttle moves beneath Xyrillian ship; is about eight times as long. 008. Shuttle: Mayweather, Tucker, Archer(vo). Tucker climbs up through roof hatch into Xyrillian airlock. 009. FX space. Shuttle separates, moves away. 010. X-Airlock: Tucker. Gas vents in. His calls elicit a delayed response, a female voice. He coughs, complains of burning lungs, but the voice assures him it will subside. ACT 2 011. FX ships fly together. 012a. Ready Room (2:15-h later): Archer, T'pol(vo), Tucker(vo), Porthos. Tucker is agitated. 012b. X-Airlock 013. X-Airlock: Tucker. He names/counts flashes of colored lights on a panel; suddenly they get too fast to count. The airlock cylinder rotates open, and he steps out. 013. X-Control deck: Tucker, Trena'l, Ahlen, >=2 others. He feels vertigo, and the alien voices warble. They explain that "perceptual tests" were the fasted way to confirm that he was ready. They've prepared a meal, but he refuses. Strongly advise he rest. Engineering is one deck up. Passes freestanding control consoles; the alien fingers spark as they slide over. He passes three tall elliptical windows looking into a tank filled with eels. 014. X-Engineering: Tucker, Ahlen. Coils, flashing red and green lights. 015. FX ships fly together. 016a. Archer's quarters: Archer, Tucker(vo), Trena'l(vo). Tucker complains of fever, difficulting concentrating. Archer's known Tucker for 8-years. "We have a good deal of experience with alien visitors," says Trena'l. 016b. X-Engineering: Tucker, Ahlen. 017. X-ship: Tucker, Ahlen. Tucker awakes to the sound of ocean waves; Ahlen tells him Archer sent the recording. He points to the stuff growing on the walls; she identifies it as their food, that it grows all over the ship. "It's very sweet," but he refuses. Hands over a basin filled with clear chunks (gelatin? ice?): "this is the closest we could come to water." She feeds him the chunks, and electricity arcs from her fingers to his lips. He asks if this happens when Xyrillians touch: "something similar". 018. FX ships fly together. 019a. Bridge: Reed, Mayweather, T'pol, Sato; Archer; 2 extras; Tucker(vo). T'pol irritably requests repair status, but Tucker reports the alien wonders, like grass on the floor (not "deck"). It releases a vapor they claim helps them metabolize their food. 019b. X-Engineering: Tucker, Ahlen, male Xyrillian. 020. X-holodeck: Tucker, Ahlen. They enter through an elliptical doorway into a wedge-shaped room with iridescent walls, pattered with spiderweb-like black lines. She takes a control device from a niche in the wall. A rocky landscape materializes, with a city in the distance. "Thera, where I come from," she says. [Unclear: is Thera the planet, region, or city?] She identifies the technology as "holographic" and "resequenced photons". Sand. She switches to a rowboat on the sea (no land in sight). She asks: without "dermal plating", how do humans detect others' moods? [Unclear: does dermal plating *display* the mood, or *sense* it?] She creates a "game": a pyramidal basin filled with crystalline "granules". "More water?" Tucker asks. Each player inserts both hands, creating a low-level telepathic link, then extracts personal trivia from the other. Tucker's favorite food is catfish; hers is "dutara root". Archer saved Tucker's life about 4-years earlier. They're called to the "reactor room" to see to the "coils". 021. Shuttle: Mayweather, Tucker. Tucker climbs down, enthused. "Teraphasic warp coils", "Xyrillians". 022a. Bridge: Archer, T'pol, Sato; Mayweather, Tucker. 022b. Screen FX: Trena'l, Ah'len, 2 Xyrillians. 022c. Screen FX. Xyriallian ship flies off, banks, flashes into warp. Silent. 023. FX Ent at warp. 024. Mess: Tucker, Reed, extras. Tucker excitedly tells Reed about the holodeck: could smell the ocean, feel the salt air. He eats scrambled eggs. Notices blister on left wrist. Infection? He "cleared bio-scan". 025. Sick Bay: Phlox, Tucker. Tucker claims he's never been allergic to anything. Phlox uses his blue-glowing scanner on Tucker's chest. Identifies the blister as a "nipple", and finds "the blastocyst" "between the sixth and seventh intercostals". Tucker is pregnant. ACT 3 026. Sick Bay: Tucker, Phlox, Archer, T'pol. Tucker slides out of the scanning tube, clad in his regulation blue underwear (shorts and top). Phlox points out "the cell cluster" on the monitor, how it has "integrated with his pericardium". He notes that, in Xyrillians, the female parent provides all the genetic material, while the male is merely a host. [Unclear: did the Xyrillians provide limited medical data (see later), has Phlox had prior experience with them, or is he guessing from Tucker's case?] Tucker's been in Starfleet for 12-years. Archer orders T'pol (and Reed) to locate the Xyrillian ship. 027. Engineering: Tucker, Dillard(m), extra. Tucker rides the lift to the second level, then becomes intrigued with the safety bar. He complains about it to Engineer Dillard (male, cauc, brun), and takes it up further to show how a rider could lose his fingers. 028. FX Ent at warp (8 days later): Archer(vo). "Captain's starlog, supplemental:". 029. Mess: Tucker. Tucker, wearing a long-sleeved shirt instead of a jumpsuit, passes through, a casts paranoid glances around the busy conversation. He enters the officers' mess. 030. Officers' Mess: Tucker, Archer, Phlox, steward(m). Tucker complains that the crew must know of his condition: Ens.Hart pulled out his chair for him. "Chicken tetrazzini". He's developed a second nipple. Phlox "has no experience with this species", but estimates another 5-6-weeks of gestation, and expects hormone shifts will cause mood swings. Tucker presses a wall button, summons a steward (male, cauc, brun, redstripe) for more tetrazzini. Archer comments that, so far as they known, Tucker's is the first inter-species pregnancy involving a human. 031. Bridge: Reed, Mayweather, T'pol, extra, Archer(vo). T'pol (in center seat) detects a ship at "0-7-8 mark 6" at 3-million-km. 032. Officers' Mess. The three leave; Tucker grabs some bread sticks. 033a. Bridge: Reed, Mayweather, T'pol, Sato. Archer, Tucker enter. Order drop to impulse. "If the ship profiles the Vulcans provided are correct --" begins Reed. T'pol confirms, yes: it's a "Klingon battle cruiser". 033b. Screen FX: Klingon ship. ACT 4 034a. Bridge: 034b. Screen FX: Klingon ship. Fires two torpedoes (yellow). 034c. Screen FX: Cpt.Varok(sp?) 035. FX: Klingon ship. Fires three torpedoes aft, then locks onto Xyrillian ship with green tractor beam. 036a. Bridge 036b. Screen FX: 037. X-Control deck: 038: X-holodeck. "I can see my house from here!" 039. FX Ent and Klingon nose-to-nose. 040a. Bridge 040b. Screen FX 041. Officers' mess: 042. FX Ent at warp. V. CONNECTIONS 1. Klingons: ENT-101/2:"Broken Bow", ENT-115:"Sleeping Dogs". VI. ANALYSIS VII.
